Celebrations for Devon Architect
— 19 Feb 2024
The Jonathan Rhind Architects team are celebrating after Andy Hedger qualified as an Architect.
Andy joined our team as an experienced architectural assistant, having been inspired to become an architect by the vernacular architecture he encountered while travelling through Europe and Asia. With a background in engineering, Andy has a keen eye for detail and is interested in how contemporary cutting-edge architecture can also be considerate and ecologically responsible.
While working, Andy undertook his Part 3 Architecture course at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. Part of the course involved undertaking in-depth case studies, and Andy chose to focus on two of our commercial projects – a barn repair and conversion and a new build restaurant – where high-quality craftsmanship was paramount. The projects helped Andy hone his technical skills in detailing complex junctions where historic building fabric meets new services installations while maintaining high quality finishes. They also helped him develop his understanding of contract administration and dealing with issues that can arise while working in and around listed buildings.
As well as the case studies, there was also an exam, coursework and a formal interview, and Andy was commended by the examination board in recognition of high achievement.
Andy is now working on a variety of projects including an extension to a grade II listed cottage; and service upgrades to a Grade I listed manor to improve its sustainability and reduce its carbon footprint without compromising the historic fabric.
The team are thrilled for Andy and delighted that his hard work has paid off. Well done!
