Architects Appointment for Luxury Art Deco Hotel
— 13 Jul 2021
We are delighted to announce that Jonathan Rhind Architects have been selected through a competitive process to work with Burgh Island Limited on plans to enhance and improve facilities and services at Burgh Island Hotel.
Where luxury, glamour and excellent service collide in the most spectacular location, Burgh Island Hotel is steeped in history and offers an experience like no other. Built in 1929 in the quintessential Art Deco style, the hotel has seen guests such as Noel Coward, Edward VIII & Wallis Simpson, and most notably Agatha Christie, who drawn in by the island’s allure stayed long enough to write two of her novels there.
The origins of the hotel date back to the 1890s when music hall star George H Chirgwin built a wooden house on Burgh Island for hosting parties. The hotel as it exists now in its Art Deco splendour has been refurbished and updated to retain the glitz of the original building while updating the services and eco credentials to modern standards.
The spectacular location on a tidal island, creates a mesmerising atmosphere whatever the weather, and we will be bringing our experience of working in such challenging (and beautiful!) locations to the project.
We will be consulting with South Hams DC and the local community and look forward to sharing our thoughts on how Burgh Island can meet its owners’ aspirations of being ‘The Best Hotel West of the Ritz’.
Watch this space for more updates as plans develop.
