Condition Surveys

Jonathan Rhind Architects has extensive experience performing condition surveys at some of the most significant historic estates in the southwest.

We undertake a comprehensive review of all aspects of the historic fabric to understand how the building is performing, diagnose defects and identify opportunities for improvement. Recommendations are appropriate to the historic building and provide frameworks for maintenance, costed repair programmes and upgrading work.

Our condition surveys help to ensure the historic building is kept in good repair, efficiently managed and fit for the future.

Example Projects: St. Michael’s Mount, Stourhead, Antony House

Streamlined Consents

Jonathan Rhind Architects is the first in the region to develop blanket listed building consents to cover routine works for groups of Grade II listed buildings.

This removes the need for repetitive consent applications and improves the quality of listed buildings for landowners and their tenants. Estates can better plan and implement upgrading work to large numbers of historic buildings for up to 25 years. The blanket consent provides a pre-approved and consistent toolkit of drawings and specifications for contractors to use across the estate, bringing consistency and quality to upgrading works.

Example Projects: Clovelly Estate, Historic Estates

Diversification

At the core of our practice is over 30 years’ experience obtaining planning and listed building consents for adaptation projects in sensitive locations, including National Parks, AONBs, Class Q, Class PA and CIL applications for exemption.

By creatively changing a building’s use, we help landowners find innovative ways to adapt their portfolio to optimise flexibility and revenue potential. Our recent projects have created tenant homes, holiday accommodation, farm shops, restaurants, workshops, offices, shoot accommodation and events spaces.

From pre-purchase surveys to feasibility studies, masterplans to finished projects, we work to support the long-term success of farms and rural estates.

Example Projects: Class Q, The Barton, China Tower, Music Performance Space

Grant Funding

Our team has delivered numerous grant-funded projects with the support of heritage and environmental stewardship schemes.

We know how to structure projects to attract and maintain funding throughout each stage, as well as fostering partnerships and match funding opportunities. We structure projects to accommodate your needs as a client and the funder’s timeframes, document submission requirements and consultation expectations. We particularly enjoy engaging with local people on heritage and land stewardship projects, and supporting apprentices learning traditional craft skills through our projects.

Example Projects: St Dubricius, Hartland Abbey, Historic Farm Building Repairs
