Current Vacancies

We are expanding our team, and are looking for people who are passionate about the conservation of historic buildings and innovative sustainable design. 

Jonathan Rhind Architects work on some of the Southwest’s most prestigious buildings. We are project architects for the National Trust, St Michael’s Mount and Pendennis Castle; and we have been instrumental in the regeneration of Woolsery village for tech entrepreneurs Michael and Xochi Birch. We recently achieved planning permission for upgrades and development to the iconic Burgh Island Hotel, as well as for a glass box extension on a Grade II* listed Queen Anne house. We are currently working on the extension and conservation of a Grade II* listed Georgian Manor in Cornwall amongst other exciting church, barn conversion and private house projects.

As a small practice with studios in Devon and Somerset members of the team have the opportunity to get involved in all stages of the project from concept sketches, to site visits and client presentations, and we encourage discussion, the sharing of ideas and a collaborative approach.

Team members are assigned a mentor, have regular practical and theoretical CPD sessions, and are supported to progress their career with further learning and qualifications. We have supported many members of our team achieve conservation accreditation and are dedicated to encouraging and supporting the next generation of conservation architects.

We are looking to expand our conservation team in North Devon with one of the following roles:

 

Conservation Architect

With an increase in enquiries, we have an opening for an experienced conservation Architect to join our friendly team in Barnstaple, Devon.

Ideal applicants will have 3-4 years in practice as well as conservation experience. We are looking for creative minds who can find solutions to fit a client’s brief whilst meeting rigorous planning and technical requirements.

The ability to prioritise workload and adapt to the differing requirements of projects is a must. The role is dynamic ever changing and will continually present diverse interesting challenges. We are looking for an applicant with a long term career in mind.

We have an experienced team to guide and assist, and we encourage collaboration and teamwork as well as learning for further qualifications.

Architectural Technologist

We are seeking an Architectural Technologist with conservation experience to join our North Devon team working on interesting historic building projects. Our jobs list is varied with projects ranging from village church conservation to planning permission on contentious sites, repair/extensions to historic houses and country estates, or designs for new build property in the countryside. We are looking for someone who is interested in working on a variety of different projects.

The ideal candidates will be/have:

  • CAD proficient, ideally Vectorworks
  • Self-motivated, imaginative and able to prioritise and manage schedules
  • A knowledge of building regulations is essential and planning would be useful
  • An interest in and experience of conservation and historic buildings

Part II Architectural Assistant

We are looking for talented individuals to join our Barnstaple team working on the conservation of historic buildings. 

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Clarity in communication
  • Excellent presentation and technical skills
  • The ability to work well within a team
  • Confidence to take on responsibility as well as working under direction
  • Enthusiasm for and knowledge of conservation and historic buildings
  • Experience of technical packages such as Vectorworks & Microsoft Office

The role will include:

  • Incorporating contemporary designs and considering the reuse of space in historic buildings
  • Design ideas for contentious sites
  • Preparation of technical drawings, reports and visualisations
  • Site visits, overseeing construction work, liaising with clients, contractors etc to take projects to completion
  • We have opportunities in Barnstaple, and offer a supportive, friendly and flexible working environment. We are a small practice which means you will be directly involved with projects on site and meeting clients. There is regular CPD training and good support for future learning.
